As children develop their literacy skills, they shift from “learning to read” to “reading to learn,” applying these skills to other subjects, such as math, social studies and science. By doing so, students are developing important vocabulary and context to help them build reading comprehension, and are also practicing all of the reading strategies they have learned. This article gives some great ideas for combining literacy and math into single lessons that can be used inside or outside the classroom.
